Families managing Feeding issues ranging from Failure to Thrive, Oral Aversions & More.
A little history, since I am a newbie... Ayden, who is almost 4, is currently able to feed himself pureed foods. He can eat up to an applesauce texture and will eat pudding thickness and everything in between. We had been seeing a feeding therapist up until late this fall, when he started school and was getting sick about every 3 weeks, so we suspended the feeding therapy because we were either canceling or Ayden had drainage and wasn't up for the challenges. We plan on getting back to the...
Hey Everyone! I am new to the forum, but I am having issues with my little man. A little background on my guy, he is 15months old, diagnosed with GERD, treated with axid, food aversion, Food Allergies, severe constipation, treated with Miralax. He is having issues with eating solids. He gags on a spoon, so baby foods are out of the question. He is able to mouth cut apples and baby carrots, but if he gets too much in his mouth, he chokes and vomits. I am not sure what to do. We are scared...
Today, I was in line waiting to check out in the grocery store. Unfortunately, tomorrow is a huge snow day so the lines were very long. I happened to be in front of a very nosy nurse. She kept eying my cart like I had explosives in it or something. Finally, she asked me how old my kids were (almost 3). In a very snotty tone, she suddenly said, "Then who is this baby food for? They STILL eat baby food?!" I was totally taken aback!! I didn't feel like going into the whole oral aversion thing,...
Asa has a feeding tube because he won't eat. He can eat, applesauce and yogurt, but won't. He has reflux, iffy motility, and sensory issues. So all these things add up to him avoiding food. We tried to avoid the tube but it has been the best thing to happen to us. We've done feeding therapy for 2 years and OT for 1 1/2. And no improvement in eating. I'm ready to just throw in the towel and give up trying to get him oral. I'm ready to use the therapy for speech and sensory. Still...
I need some advice about getting Jillian off the bottle. Although she's 1 and a half, she continues to get the majority of her calories and hydration from her bottles. She drinks anywhere from 13-16 oz day of milk fortified with CIB. (30 cals/oz) She can drink from a straw (*she never did drink from a sippy due to her oral aversions) and takes water/juice about 4-6 oz day. Here's the problem: She will only take a sip here and there of milk from the straw. The 13-16 oz she gets from the...
My DS just turned 3. He had reflux as a baby and we have been to the feeding clinic several times since he was 1. They always just tell me to work on scheduling and keep trying. The GI said he believes it is all behavioral. Well, DS recently tested for sensory issues and they said he definately has sensory issues. DS has always been chronically constipated and needs Miralax daily. Feeding issues are getting worse daily but DR says because his growth looks fine there isn't a problem. I've...
Weight check and meet with dietician tomorrow. ALso meet with Gi doc.Praying for weight gain.
We saw genetics today and he is still scratching his head over Lindsey. He is pretty sure that her feeding issues are medical and not behavioral/aversions/etc. He wants to try and get her in to a feeding clinic that looks at feeding issues from a medical standpoint, as opposed to the ones that only focus on the behavior and getting the kids to eat, weaned off their tubes, etc. He recommended Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Does anyone know anything about this or any other place I should look? ...
Has anyone found the trick to getting puddign to thicken up with these milks. My daughter is allergic to milk and soy and i can't get he puddign to thicken up. Any magic ideas????
No one can figure Lindsey out. She has no problems that anyone can find, yet she is unable to tolerate most (if not all) foods. Currently she can only eat pears, and I don't even know if that is 100% ok for her. She is happiest on just neocate. Is there anyone else in this circumstance? Or was anyone's kid like this and they finally figured out why?? I just don't know where to go from here, and neither do any of her doctors, although her genetics dr is talking about sending her off...
Just curious , Bryce has been on an elemental diet since 5 weeks old he has sever allergies, acid reflux, and FTT just wondering anyone with more than 1 child - do you know if it is something that is hereditary ? Id love to nurse since we are broke but what are the odds it will happen again with another child ? anyone have any experiences with this ?
Any success stories of transitioning your ex-tube feeder to childcare after tube weaning? I have been on an extended leave of absence from work while dealing with my son's medical issues and while he has been in intensive feeding therapy to become an oral eater. He just became tube-free last month and we're now considering putting him in daycare for the first time so that I can return to work. Any tips or advice on how to find a childcare provider that doesn't undo everything we have...
Does anyone have any high calorie shake recipes (or websites for it) that they could share? My ds has struggled with feeding problems his whole life and complete refusal of the high calorie supplement drinks like pediasure and Boost. He used to take nutritional drinks like Resource Juice Drink. He has been drinking chocolate milk fortified with duocal and was refusing vanilla flavor until now. He just tried a supplement drink (apparently not yet on the market-sample given by his doctor's...
Hi, I am new to the board. My name is Sara and I have a son Evan who is 13 months old. Evan has hypotonia, microcephalus, and developmental delays. Yesterday he had an oral/feeding therapy evaluation. I was told Evan has low muscle tone in his face and is going to need additional oral therapy to help build those muscles for chewing and biting. He is currently on all pureed food. My pediatrician wants us to have Evan on all whole milk. My question is... how much milk should he get a day? I am so...
and the RN case worker and Nutritous talked to each other and think it's too early to think about 1 yet. They want him to gain weight on a steady base.
My daughter has been on the KKI Day Program waiting list for 10 months. She SHOULD start in the program end of April/early May. They haven't verified insurance yet but said they will in March. I am getting very antsy, I feel like the last 10 months of being on the waiting list and WAITING is a waste if insurance denies. I am not sure why they do not verify insurance right away. Anyway, my question is has anyone with Anthem BCBS gone to KKI????? Anyone with an insurance denial...
Well, we did the swallow study, and it did not go well. Part of the problem was that the OT doing the study did not listen to me. I told her that Doug gets defensive around spoons and that it would not be a good idea to approach him with a spoon right at the beginning. He normally bats spoons away from his face. He'll sometimes let me sneak one in on him if he's been happily chewing on one of his cookies, so I suggested we start that way. Well, she said that she didn't feel safe starting with...
Does anyone log what their child's oral intake is? How do you log it? Is there an online form, website or other that you use?? TIA :)
Has anyone used this before with their LO? How did it go? We're seriously considering changing Janna's diet gradually over to this with the help of a dietitian. Mostly because of issues with bowel movements - I've heard that this can improve on a blended diet and personally if I was fed only pediasure I'm sure I'd feel ill most of the time. :turngreen: I'm not the kind of person who can eat the same thing day in and day out and it makes me really feel for Janna. I think we can do...
Emily is doing so well on the puddings that her feeding therapist gave me some different recipes to puree. I would be happy to share them if you need them. PM me. They are all honey/ pudding purees.
We are trialing foods. Lindsey hasn't had any of her "usual" reactions, but I don't even know if "usual" is "normal" if you know what I mean... Anyway, she seems to have done well with pears the last few weeks and not done well with bananas or apples. Nothing big happened, but she didn't really like to eat them, and she did have some weird diapers. Now she is on to butternut squash and ate it yesterday and the day before. Still none of the "usual" reactions, but she is VERY cranky and...
My son Charlie did the intensive feeding therapy day program at St. Joseph's in New Jersey recently. He did extremely well during the program. He went from not accepting a spoon at all to accepting 1.5 - 2 oz of pureed table food in 4 1/2 weeks. We were up to 6 different foods at discharge. As the environment there is very controlled, plus he has started back in day care (and I am back to work from maternity leave) he is not accepting the table food as before. Also he had a stomach bug...
My son Alex is 12 months old...when he was about four months old he was diagnosed with dysphagia and the drs realized he was aspirating (swallow study) and we were put on honey-thick formula feeds. Over the next few months he started refusing feedings altogether and we ended up having a g-tube put in 8/09. We did tube feedings with some Stage 1 solids during the day...we gradually got 100% bottle fed with nectar thick formula and Stage 2 purees. The speech therapist and doctor told us to...
Hi all My son has a suspected allergy to milk protein, threw up after bottles when baby which stopped when switched to soy & nutramigen formula, tried to move over to cows milk at 1 but started throwing up again so is now on goats milk. Hes 21 months and 90% for height and 10% for weight, although he eats quite abit. Hes still on 3 8oz milk sippys / day (plus 3 big meals). To get some weight on him I have been trying pediasure instead of his afternoon bottle, he loves it but now has the...
I am new to this site. My daughter Vienne, has swallowing dysphagia, GERD, and now they call it cp of the throat. she was eating five months ago, only purees, and has completley turned around. she refuses to eat. she works with an ot, but nothing, she wont take anything by month. I am frustrated and the doctors at OSHU are more concerned with her weight. I just wondered why she would start this. she is also not tolerating large volumes of formula so we do 8 feedings. help
