  2. Arrow Sticky Thread Sticky: IDEA 2004 The Statute

This is an important read because in it Congress lists the "Purpose" (mission statement) of IDEA 2004 as well as the Definitions. The general rule of thumb when reading IDEA is that any time you don't understand what you are reading read it over and also read the pupose section over again as well. The spirit of the laws should serve to meet the purpose. If you cannot read the attached PDF file, go to Adobe Acrobat's download website and download Acrobat Reader for free: ...

I'm trying to prepare as much as I can so that Cate gets the help she needs, and I'm SOO overwhelmed by the fight I'm going to have in a month or 2. :r_flame: My hubby refuses to help me, and I haven't found any advocates that are fee in our area, so I'm going it alone which scares the crap out of me!. I HATE HATE HATE IEPS! whine over...no reply needed.

  2. Disappointing visit to kindergarten classroom

Reece has been in a developmental preschool within our local school district for more than two years. He will graduate in June and start kindergarten in September. Our school district has three kindergarten options: mainstream, transitional (special education, 10-12 kids in class with a teacher and para educator) and contained learning center classroom. Reece's teacher is recommending that he be placed in the transitional kindergarten program. Reece is at peer level for academics, but is...

  3. IEP and new school

Tyler will turn 5 in May and should/can go to Kindy next year (2010-11). I have a few concerns about him going and not sure what to do with my concerns. Here is the deal we are currently in a school that he gets ST services in. We are slated to go to the brand new school (school "J") in the fall. I have the name of the principal at the new school and from what I have been told it is a good pick. She has a background in ST & ESE, SN is near and dear to her heart (so I have been told), all...

  5. Animal Dancingpig So Happy!!!!

This sounds SOO weird, but I received Cates Psych eval today (appt was 8/31/09)...don't ask, the report was NEVER completed! Anyway..... She does have a diagnosed learning disability, and has tested borderline to low average on Verbal IQ & Performance IQ...WOOHOOO!!! The Psych also stated that this might be an underestimation of her learning potential...and wants "close monitoring over the next year or two". He also wants her in "gmall group learning opportunities, as well as...

  6. Rolleyes1 PT assessment

I know that this is a losing battle and we will just need to live with this, but I am tempted to write my own assessment report following the general outline of the PT report we curiously received on Friday....two days AFTER the physiatry appointment that the PT knew about. It would look like this: "We have continued to work on independent reading and math facts at home. This year, Devon has frequently expressed a desire not to participate in these sessions. (Of course we haven't told...

  7. Speech therapy and IEP

Would you expect your very delayed child to get more than 30 minutes of speech each week? Right now Emeric is 3.5 and he is roughly at 15-18 months expressively. He's made some progress over the last year but not much. He goes to a special ed class 2x a week for 2 hours but 1 on 1 speech is 30 minutes weekly. I talked to the supervisor in his class and told her that I do not believe he's getting enough speech and that there are kids much less delayed that are getting the exact same amount. She...

  8. School Bus Ugh! RN at special needs preschool.....

I have never posted in the forum because Eric just started special ed preschool about 3 weeks ago. He attends 2 days a week and is having a wonderful time and comes home smiling everyday he is there! Our pediatrician had sent an emergency protocol letter with instructions on what to do if Eric's g-tube were to come out when he is at school. I got a letter from the nurse last week that she has never been trained how to do that! I can't believe with all the special needs children and tube fed...

  9. Oh CRUD!

I've been warned by Cate's OT that the transfer team wants her in FULL time Kindy! That's NOT going to work! AHHHHH!!!!! Her OT has made her point VERY clear that SHE is the ONLY one that knows Cate and has SEEN her behavior issues! The team isn't budging....YET! Her OT has worked in the school Cate will be going for 30 years, and she's talking to the receiving team tomorrow about what accommodations they will be willing to make. I've informed her OT that I will NOT allow my child to...

This special education policy manuel is just killing me it seems like they go around their butt to get to the point...andI have already been warned if I go in knowing nothing then my baby suffers. 1. Who is responsible for his feedings? 2. Who makes sure he gets taken out of his wheelchair every two hours? 3. Who will feed him breakfast/lunch...because he does eat stage 2...

  13. Help Need to get the ball rolling

Noah wants to go back to school next year and I don't want to deny him this. If he can't do public school then he will learn he can't do it or he will love it and thrive. He will be in 5th grade in the fall so this is the year to do it before he goes to middle school. The reason I pulled him out of public school in Kindergarten is because short of hiring a lawyer they dropped his IEP because he was to academically intellegent regardless the fact he was 3 years behind socially, not potty...

  14. sad Need Advice Issues with Special-Ed Pre-K

My kiddos are aging out of Early Intervention in May. So currently, they are 33 months old. We had a pre-evaluation for the special needs pre-k yesterday. We were only supposed to discuss how the evaluation process would go. Everyone was at the meeting - ST, OT, social worker, and the head of the dept. During the meeting, the ST was sitting next to me and my DD (on my lap) and it appeared that she was analyzing her while discussions were underway. Now, a quick history of my DD's speech issues:...

  15. Help planning Kindergarten bussing......

My daughter is starting Kindergarten (modified schedule), next year. We are starting to talk bussing (sp?). My daughter will be in her Bingo chair (has tie downs) for transport, and outside of the classroom. Inside of the classroom, she will be included, with some changes such as a slant board for writing, and modified seating. What have other people done for busing? Does anyone transport their own little one? Just unsure of sending my little one home alone on the bus. And we live in a...
