Does anyone else deal with this? We've had excellent control (about a year now) with Depakote but it has cause a lot of hairloss and the texture of what is left is like straw. We've given her zinc and selenium and it has helped but very little. We saw our epi yesterday and she suggested for us to try vitamin D in addition to a multivitamin. It may seem petty but Devon had beautiful thick hair. I'm glad that the epi understands and talked about alternatives if the hairloss becomes intolerable....
If so, I would love to ask you some ?'s!
Lola has an MRI scheduled for 10 am on March 17. We go in at 9, and she is not allowed to eat for 12 hours before the procedure because she requires sedation. When we asked how we should give her meds to her, they said, "With a tiny swallow of water, or have her take the pills with nothing." :skeptical:Uh, I get the risk of aspiration/sedation thing, but she's 3, and can't actually just swallow the pills with water. I have to hide them in a bite of scrambled eggs (she takes 3 divalproex sodium...
So the pedi ordered hip films and doppler u/s of the veins in her L leg based on our concerns. Interestingly the L hip was fully in socket, and the right was completely dislocated. This is a change as both have just been subluxed for the past few years. There is no explanation for the L swelling (which it still is). The radiologist actually came into the exam room and looked at her leg to see if he could see evidence of some condition (DH was there and can't remember the name )...
Dr. C and his opthamologist ( who stopped over to meet with Dr. C about Alec) was there, and they agreed there is definitely something progressive going on with Alec. They are leaning towards Mito, but also running a metabolic panel and a microarray. He found Alec's hair pattern very interesting ( he has 3 cowlicks that meet at the center of his head to make a mohawk) and very "syndrome like" so running a bunch of labs. We'll have those results in about 4 weeks, but Dr. C did say, not...
Last night Mya had another set of seizures. Then around 2 am her gas output in her ostomy and vent bag exploded. We are having to vent both bags every 3-5 minutes. It is quite frustrating. I stopped the formula this morning hoping the gas output would slow down. Unfortunately it hasn't. Any ideas on how to slow it down? I am trying to understand the gut-brain connection and her seizures. Her GI feels it is the stress of her gut causing the seizures. Can someone please explain this to me????
do you have one Dr. that oversees the ENTIRE case? Jacob's case is complex and has lots of Doctors. I thought it was the job of the Neuro to oversee everything since Jacob's diagnosis is a neurological disease. However, he seems to brush off anything that he feels does not relate to him and tells us everything is fine. Everything is not fine and I found that out from another one of Jacob's Doctors calling me Friday evening. He is very concerned about Jacob and his labs that just days prior, the...
So we are 12 weeks into our 'trial'. 12 weeks ago we increased one of his medications. We are going to continue to increase it ever 12 weeks along with Echo, EKG and labs every 12 weeks to check progress. First check up since we started the trial and his heart size has NOT increased~ even slightly decreased!!!! But even more importantly~ his energy has come up a bit. Nothing drastic, but something that we did notice. The good days are better and the bad days are not as bad. I feel...
because I think it would be good to do an admission right now if his gi and urologist could come in and see him and do some testing while we are there. His stomache just isnt cooperating. The more food that goes in it the worse the constipation is. He is in pain and it is bloated once again. And his bladder is no better off as it is spasming so much right now. I got an apt in a few weeks to see the gi and that is first available and he will be admitted that same week for an overnight VEEG then...
We have seen the same pediatric neurologist since Weston was in the NICU (8 1/2yrs). He has his yearly appt. Friday. I called to confirm the time and she said they would see us Friday, but we would have to find another dr. after that, they no longer take our ins. Weston has BCBS primary and Ky Medicaid 2ndary. It is the Medicaid they won't take. I asked if they could bill BCBS and we pay what was left. They said no. I called the peds. office and they gave me the number to a local neurologist 20...
This virus is kicking our butts. Tyler started Zithro last night for what is now clearly a sinus infection. (today marks day 17 of high fevers). Brandon saw the ped this afternoon and is now on Keflex (QID - UGH!) for a developing pnemonia. His cough is just awful. The ped said his chest sounded 'mostly alright' but there was definately something brewing. Didnt bother with xrays or labs as he said regardless of the results he would still be starting keflex, so we just went...
I'm really worried about Molly. It is so frustrating when you have to play the 'rule it out' game to figure out what's wrong. Molly has not been herself for nearly a month now. Low grade fevers off and on (not sure if they're even true fevers....maybe autonomic?), irritability, just not acting right, kwim? At first we thought upper respiratory, so we started predinisone for a few days and it cleared right up, but the fevers and irritability continued. So we moved on to possible UTI and are...
Brody has his labs today after doubling his iron intake 8 weeks ago. What will happen if he has made no progress towards raising his H & H? They are also checking ferratin, binding and saturation (which we already know won't be great), and something else. I just realized I have no idea what will happen if these labs aren't any better. THanks!
Gearing up for the summer (which is always difficult for us to keep dd hydrated), we are trialing some nutritional supplements. Everything has to be gluten free, casein free, and soy free, so we are really limited. We just trialed EO28 Splash from Nutricia, and it was terrible. Next is Duocal and Neocate Junior. Does anyone have any suggestions on which ones are actually decent tasting? Or any other suggestions on good formulas? Thanks! Sue
In honor of CHD awareness week, I thought it would be nice to have a check-in for any heart kids here. How is everybody doing? Any upcoming procedures or appointments? Doug is doing pretty good, heart-wise. We'll know more at his next cardiology clinic, which is coming up in March. He hasn't gained any weight in almost three months, so I'm a little nervous about that. But in that time, he's gone from barely being able to sit up alone to cruising the furniture and climbing the stairs. He's...
Cade's sleep doc wants us to add melatonin to his sleep meds. For those of you who use it, what do you think of it? Can it be crushed/dissolved in a syringe?
Sorry if I've asked this before, can't remember. Do your kids det really irritable after seizures? Sometimes its worse than the seizure itself or maybe its part of the seizure.
Mya is being upped to 20 mls an hour of vivanex pediatric via j tube. And they are cutting her TPN in half. WOOHOO!!!! :clapping: She is doing so good. Her tummy is the flattest I have ever seen. She looks so good.
Mya has a double lumen broviac. Well she has been feeling really good today and was very active. At around 5 pm her TPN kept alarming saying it was occluded. It took us a bit to find it but oh man not good. The lumen that her TPN is hooked to was twisted and kinked. We tried to straighten it out but no luck. I finally put tape around it and it helped a bit but the lumen is obviously no good anymore. I have no idea how they fix these. I understand it can be fixed without having to replace the...
Just when we think things start to calm down and we can get things stable....yeah... well... this am, we get Alec awake as usual, I check his temp and it's 95.1 axillary. (his norm) and roll him onto his back, and his face is covered in old and newer blood.....nose bleed. His room is NOT dry by any means...and he has had 3 in a matter of days. First one while at a splint fitting. Anyway, we start to clean him up, and notice his hands are literally ICE cold and blue, and his face is...
So Lindsey was NPO and just taking Neocate in her tube for about 6 weeks to let her body have a rest. We have no idea still what is causing her problems, if it is ALL foods, or particular foods, or whatever. So anyway, a week and a half ago, we started some food trials. We started out with pears, and she did really well for 3-4 days. She was excited to eat, and she had no reactions that I could see. The only thing that I recall is that she had maybe an extra spot or two on her face, but...
Today, I was getting Hayden out of the car to go to target. I had just unbuckled him so he leaned forward to get out of his harness. Suddenly, he paused and stared at the back of the passenger seat, but it was more like a 1000yd stare. He was like that for about 2.5sec then proceeded to continue to get out of the car. That was weird.
