  1. Meds Question Strattera and alternatives (again!)

It's been awhile since I've done more than lurk here lately, but of course, the first thing I do with med questions is come straight to P2P. ;) Gabriel finally saw the new developmental pediatrician this afternoon, and she feels that in addition to Aspergers, he likely has ADHD -- let's just say he gave an admirable demonstration of the fidgeting and impulsive behavior within the hour we were there lol. She has recommended Strattera because she is concerned about the side effects of...

  2. GFCF

For those of you who do/have done this how long did it take to see a change? We finally decided to just DO IT today and I bought what we would need for a week's worth of meals and snacks at the grocery. I don't think he'll be completely GFCF yet... this week I concentrated on breakfast (wow! easy) and snacks (not so easy). Next week I'll tackle lunch and dinner so he is 100% gfcf. This is hard beause we live in a REALLY small town. I may have to look at traveling an hour once a month to...

  4. Just re-did the CARS... oh happy day.

We first did the CARS a year ago... Tucker scored a 39. Severely classically autistic. We just did it again tonight (I did it alone last night, but made my husband do it with me tonight because I thought I must be giving him too much credit somewhere). He got a 31.5 both times. Mildly autistic :) I know that's only one measure... but I'll take it. Have I mentioned that I like behavior therapy?

  5. Clipboard1 Check in everyone

It's been a while since we've done one of these, and the board is a lot more active than it used to be. What is your child with ASD's name? Age? Grade (if applicable)? Diagnosis? Your favorite thing your child does? Something they've recently achieved? Anything else you'd like to share?

  7. You just have to smile...

It had been about two months since we last put Tucker in underwear... just to see if he would have ANY inclination to use the potty. So, we did it again today. We kept sticking him on the potty, and kept pointing out the potty, all to no avail. When he finally DID pee, he was splashing in it like "Oh look! A puddle! Where'd that come from! How fun!" Totally oblivious. Makes me happy we have one floor of our house with no carpet :) Diapers for another few months... we are going to let...

  8. Ugh! Maeve+dentist=yuck

EEK! I'm dreading this afternoon. We're taking Maeve to the dentist. She hasn't been in about 3 years-with the dentist's blessing. The last time we were there, I got a fat, bloody lip. I tried talking to him at Molly's appt. about the need for sedation but he was insistent that we wouldn't sedate her w/out "seeing what's in her mouth" HA good luck buddy!! Trying to be positive but seriously the odds of him seeing her mouth are slim to none! Dh is leaving work to come and my mom is...

  9. What does regression look like?!?

After a really bad few days I'm starting to get concerned about Tucker... He is refusing foods again (not super picky... but a week or so ago he still ate EVERYTHING we put in front of him) He is stimming a lot more His echolalia is RIDICULOUS And in general he just seems to be in his own world a lot...

  10. Baseball Signed Sarah up for Softball

I hope she does OK. She is not exactly the most skilled player and she hasn't played in a couple of years. I just hope the coaches and the other girls will be patient with her. She really wants to try out next year for the high school JV softball team. This is the only sport she has ever shown any interest in so I really hope she gets some quality coaching this year so she can improve enough to play next year. It is just so hard because she is so far behind socially and she will be...

  11. Not aggresion... exactly...

We are having SERIOUS issues with Tucker being in Pixie's personal space. He likes to hang all over her, "tickle" her (which actually amounts to scratching her, though this is not his intention), fiddle with her hair (he likes EVERYONE's hair, if they have long hair). They do sometimes rough house, so he thinks that is what he is doing, however Pixie is NOT amused and whats to be left alone 90% of the time at least. He just does not know when to quit, literally. I can't figure out how to...

  12. Good News Kaden got his weighted blanket!

Some of you may remember me saying Kaden was going to be getting a weighted blanket. A friend of mine who is VERY talented made one for him. Here are a couple of pics. (landen had to be in the pic too) I'm also adding a few that will show the detail. The lady (angie) used Robot material b/c Kaden loves robots and then underneath, used Minky fleece. She used the poly-fill beads and each pocket has an equal amt of beads inside and she carefully double-stitched it to ensure I will NEVER be...

  13. Appointment Officially diagnosed today...

Well, Jaxen had his development appointment today and was officially diagnosed with classic autism. He didn't say how severe at this time, said we'll need more time to see how he progresses. I'm kindof relieved that now we have a name to put to this developmental delay. Also his EI is always saying that it's just gotta be something else. It's nice to have at least some answers.

  14. hmmm......

So, according to the neuro who dx'ed Hayden with PDD-NOS and said he has every indication of Asperger's except his age, said that he absolutely ISN'T on the spectrum because he will interact with adults. She says that the definition of Autism doesn't differentiate in what groups the child will interact with ( children vs. adults) so therefore he must not be on the spectrum because he interacts with adults. He has quirks and a few of the strong behaviors but isn't autistic. Then says that...

  15. Hoarding advice?

A little background. Ty has PDD-NOS. He has began to hoard. Everything. It began with erasers and pencils now it is everything. Food included. He "feels sorry" for everything and they are his "buddies". It doesnt matter if it is a tag, a tiny piece of plastic (you know the ends of the tag holders that go into tags?) a piece of pancake or a wrapper. It just doesnt matter. Something has got to change this. I tried to help him clean his room the other day and he was going through the trash...

  16. Ugh! been up since 1:30 AM

I started Nick on his new med yesterday for ADHD and he was extra quirky all day. Maybe not as hyper but definately more focused on his obsessions. To make matters worse he got up at 1:30 and woke up everyone in the house. Needless to say, I did not give him another dose today. Anyone experience this?

  17. Ugh! confused!!! meds for ADHD and autism

Nicholas has been on Risperdol and it has helped his behavior, but he is still very challenging. The plus is that the Risperdol has helped him gain a few pounds and I was actually able to remove Nick's G tube after not using it for 7 months. He is still pretty skinny, though! The psychiatrist wants me to give him vyvanex for his severe ADHD along with the Risperdol. The problem is that Vyvanex is a stimulant that can cause loss of appetite and can slow growth in small children. I still...

  18. Vacation...

We are on vacation and we are in the middle of a trial by fire of Tucker not being in a crib/confined bed. A week or so before we left he truly mastered climbing out of the pack n play so we knew there would be no point to bringing it. Overall he has been doing GREAT, but the mornings are about an hour earlier than they used to be 5:30 or 6 instead of 7:00 or 7:30. But, a couple mornings have been.... UGH 1:15 am, 2:30 am and 4:00. Funny... the day he got up at 4:00 am my husband asked him...

  19. Uhhhh...yikes. Please help. I'm totally weirded out.

So, out of nowhere today, I notice Will is grabbing himself a lot. He's also following N around a lot and I *think* trying to rub up against her from behind. I don't know why he's chosen her, but clearly something itches, or at least I think so because he can't keep his hands off of himself. He's kind of leaned up against the table a few times too. I can't see a yeast rash...we are getting ready to bathe him as he did have a couple of blowout diapers today which may ? be an issue. ...

Has anyone noticed how it says for Autism Spectrum Disorders including Aspergers syndrome? Makes it sound like Asp isn't a part of ASD. lol.

  22. Do you always say something?

If your child is doing something socially unacceptable or awkward and someone stares or gives you a dirty look do you tell them your child has autism? I have only said something once when we were on an airplane and Emeric was screaming(not crying, just laughing and screaming loudly) and making weird noises and this man kept turning around and staring at us as if to say, "quiet him down" I did apologize and tell him that he had autism hoping that maybe that would make him more understanding.

  23. fatigue?

This past Friday, before the 2nd snowstorm hit, DH and I had to take Landen to the ENT and then we got some groceries. We had to walk through the grocery store and honestly, it was not that long, but Kaden started wearing out. He keeps saying his legs hurt and he can't walk anymore. This isn't the first time. DH said it's the same thing when he takes him to Home Depot with him or any other place where there is walking. It's so weird, he has spurts of energy and then he just crashes. Even at...

  24. Social Stories

My parents just sent me down a few board books i had when i was little. they were about a little bear that would do small specific tasks per book. one was getting ready for bed, another was playing with toys, another was gardening, ect. Emily has really responded well to them. I was hoping that you all might have some recommendations for simple books like that for a preschooler. I have found social stories on amazon but they seem to aimed towards older kids. am i wrong? How and when do...

  25. missed appointment

I am a little bit upset, not devastated, but a little bit peeved. I have been waiting for our appointment with the Dev. Pedi for 3 months but my husband has decided that it was not necessary for Emily to be seen, so we didn't go. She is very quirky with tantrums and routines and we strictly manage her situations. it is stressful on us all but he thinks all in all, she is fine. she is so smart, he just doesn't think something can be wrong because of that. I have this odd nagging feeling that...
