Obviously this is only an alert, not intended as meical advice. If your child has been prescribed this medication please consult your dr. Every child reacts to medications differently. THis is a notice that there has been an alert made about this medication.
Again, consult your chils doctors for more info regarding your child specific case. Alert: Promethazine HCl Unsafe for Kids Under 2 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert to warn parents and physicians not to give allergy medications containing the antihistamine promethazine hydrochloride, known as promethazine HCl, to children under two years of age due to the reports of seven deaths linked to the medication. The drug is sold by Wyeth under the brand name Phenergan, as well as in various generic versions. The FDA warning covers all forms of the drug, including syrups, suppositories, tablets and injectable liquids. The drug has been used for many years to treat hay fever, stuffy or runny nose and other allergies. It was approved by the FDA in 1951. The alert was issued because the FDA received reports of seven deaths and 22 cases of respiratory depression in children under age two. According to the FDA Alert: "Cases of respiratory depression including fatalities have been reported with use of promethazine HCl in children less than two years of age. Caution should also be exercised when administering promethazine HCl in any form to pediatric patients two years of age and older."

Our hospital changed it's policy back in January I think. Ped gave Aidan zofran instead with his Rotavirus. It was a pain b/c it was in suspension b/c of his age - but NO pharmacy (including the hospital pharmacy open to the public) had it in stock. Took 36 hours to order it. I'm thinking that will change and pharmacies might start stocking some. Thanks for the explanation.

I think it is most commonly used for naseau(sp). Amelia was given that when she was retching really really bad. Her Ped did tells us that is not recommended for kids under 2 b/c of respiratory suppression and to watch her very very closely. Kinda scary but what do you do when two other meds haven't helped!!!!
