I'm baffled and a bit worried... - Parent-2-Parent & Reflux in Children

Caroline has had a virus since Tuesday night. She has complained of a sore throat, headache, and has had a fever (threw up twice with the fever until we started alterating the motrin and tylenol). We took her to the doctor Wednesday afternoon where they did a strep test - negative - and looked her over. The ped said her throat was really red and called it a virus. Said the fever would last three days.

Here we are today, and she's no better and honestly, looks worse to me. At least in the early days of it, she would look fine when taking the motrin.

What is puzzling me though, is how her symptoms have changed....she now looks like she has a beginning sinus infection.

Her nose is really runny and sometimes yellowish, but her eyes are soooo puffy. Still has a sore throat and headache at times when the meds are wearing off and the fever (102 ish). She also told me tonight that it hurts when she goes to the bathroom, but I asked this, so it was prompted...hard to tell if that's the truth.

None of it goes together and makes any sense!! I don't know what to do for her...she's miserable...more so than she was all of last week. I guess we'll be calling the ped tomorrow...a Sunday when they charge you the big bucks unless it is an emergency.

I am so sorry Heather. Maybe she caught a virus and developed a sinus infection on top of it? Poor kid.

Heather, when they did her strep test did they do a second swab for a 24 hour culture? A while back, Noah was really sick and his ped said looked like strep but the rapid test was negative. He did a second swab for a 24 our culture and it was positive. If they didn't , I would aske about it tomorrow since the ped initially suspected Strep.

i hope the doctor can give you answers. we have done several weekend visits but, thankfully, we only pay a co-pay either way, so its no more $$. Keep us posted on how she is doing.

I agree about doing another strep test. I seem to get strep a lot, and my rapid tests are almost always negative. But then the longer test comes out positive. Maybe she developed a sinus infection on top of the inital throat issue.

I hope she feels better soon! These things always happen on weekends, ugh!

Hey there-
Thanks. A bit of an update: She's sleeping right now, but we are calling first thing in the morning to see what's going on. I've never seen her like this before...she was beside herself and was shaking (which I know was the fever climbing)...just crying that she didn't feel well, but was hardly intelligible. Can't explain it, but it was scary enough for me to start to panic. Something I don't normally do.

They did do the longer culture, I guess. Our ped said they always send it out and she'd call us if there was a problem. They did the rapid test on Wednesday after hours, but I'm sure we'd know something by now, wouldn't we?

Anyway....fingers crossed for an okay night...she's sleeping with us tonight.

I hope they didn't overlook or the lab didn't get results called in. Ped told us last time dd had strep that headache,fever and vomiting are actually very common with strep. Hope they figure something out.
